For several years I wrote and edited for a bariatric surgeon who was rather passionate about his field. He didn’t just want people to lose weight. He wanted everyone to lose weight, including a friend of mine who was severely underweight. He seemed to find her borderline okay. He wanted the world to lose weight. And keep losing. As far as I could tell, he hated food.

Oddly, on a credenza in his office he displayed a photograph of one of his very young daughters eating a piece of pizza the size of her head, while grinning maniacally, and I happen to know he himself was addicted to dark chocolate because he talked about it in one of his books, all the while overusing the word delicious. (Look, we get it, okay? It’s chocolate, for cat’s sake.)

I have to wonder about a doctor who wants his patients to stop eating but has a photo in his office of someone happily devouring pizza, though it’s possible that office was the administrative one, not one where he met patients. Maybe his exam rooms were full of nothing but cross-sections of adipose tissue and Lap-Bands.

It took several years for me to try his lose 40 pounds in 90 days protein shakes for the win diet. He believed in…
